It feels like Felix is initially interested in learning more, hearing about Jesus and learning what it means to grow in faith, until Paul starts to talk about “righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come.” This frightens Felix, and he dismisses Paul to call upon him later when the opportunity comes.

This passage reminds me of Jesus’ teaching to the rich young ruler. He tells the rich young ruler to sell all that he has and follow Him. Instead, the rich young ruler walks away disheartened for he was a man with much wealth. Jesus then says that it is hard for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. It was the rich young ruler’s love for money that kept him from loving and following Jesus. Is there something that is keeping you from loving Jesus wholeheartedly? Let us check our hearts and ask the Lord what may be keeping us from a completely committed relationship with Jesus.

Take time to reread Acts 24 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

One of the biggest weaknesses in our faith is our lack of trust in God with everything because we want to personally make sure that things succeed. However, when we take control of our own situations, we are simply saying to God that we don’t believe He knows what is best for us.

In this passage, Paul’s sister’s son happened to hear about the plot on Paul’s life. There seems to be an aspect of serendipity here, and we see that God had Paul’s protection in mind all along. Circumstantially, it seems impossible, but through God, it seems orchestrated. We might not always know how God moves, but we do know He moves. So we must remain faithful through whatever circumstances we face, for our Father always knows what is best for us. Pastor John Piper says, “God does not drive an ambulance.” Meaning, our God is never surprised. He knows all. And therefore, He plans all for our lives. Let us trust in His plan for our lives.

Take time to reread Acts 23 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

He begins with how the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness in his life brought him from being a prosecutor of Christians to becoming one of them. He describes his conversion experience and shares the path the Lord has placed him on. After reflecting upon the experience, we see the question in verse 16, “Why delay?” Paul remembers the call of Ananias who proclaimed healing over him and brought the message of Jesus Christ to him. And we see the immediacy with which Paul is called to believe.

This is what I believe God is doing for us now. There is no reason to delay in following after the Lord. No thinking needed. No processing needed. The irresistible call of Jesus is shared for all to listen and follow. The call of the Lord is upon you today. Why wait any longer? He calls us to come into His comfort. Into His arms. He provides all that we need, for He is all that we need. Let us just follow His call, today, tomorrow, and for all of eternity.

Take time to reread Acts 22 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

Throughout his missionary journeys, Paul had been attacked, shipwrecked, and nearly died on many occasions. What we see in Paul is an unwavering commitment to move towards where God has convicted him to go. One of the most admirable qualities of Paul is His obedience to the Lord despite all of its challenges. We see earlier in the chapter that the other believers are trying to convince Paul not to go to Jerusalem because they knew by the Spirit that Paul would face persecution. Paul, knowing what was to come, was grieved and yet he marched forward. They simply all agreed and said, “The will of the Lord be done!” Are we moving in conviction that no matter what challenges may come, our Lord will remain good and faithful? What are we convicted of doing in the Spirit? Will we go in obedience?

Take time to reread Acts 21 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

That something should be exchanged for mutual benefit. Or justice should be exacted with equivalent sacrifice. Either way, it doesn’t make sense to give something for nothing. Nor does it make sense to work hard with no benefit for myself or my immediate family. Yet, Paul reminds us of Jesus’ words – It is more blessed to give than to receive. However, those who opposed Paul and Barnabas were Christians who had been Pharisees. They still believed Gentiles must become Jews first to be saved. They were teaching work-based salvation, requiring circumcision. The early church gives us a model of the members of a faith community actively seeking God’s will for sending out missionaries and workers. They fast and wait on the Lord. They pray and lay hands on those who are called out to do God’s work. There is a beautiful partnership amongst the members of a local church to be part of God’s kingdom work.

Take time to reread Acts 13 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

Herod had executed James, one of Jesus’ earliest disciples, and then put Peter in prison because the Jews who opposed the church were pleased by Herod’s actions. What is powerful about the early church is their faith that overcomes fear. Seeing James put to death, and Peter put in prison could’ve caused the early disciples to become fearful of man and frightened to suffer for their faith, but we learn that they pressed on with prayer and prayer for Peter “was being made to God intensely by the church.” They grew in boldness, unity, and believed in God for Peter’s deliverance. How is God leading you to labor in prayer?

Take time to reread Acts 12 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

Barnabas was a key player in the early church. God equipped him to strengthen local churches, encouraging them “to remain true to the Lord.” After discerning that it was timely and fitting for Paul to join him in ministry, Barnabas and Paul spent an entire year teaching the believers at Antioch until they were sent to other local churches or unreached cities. Whatever length of time God gave Barnabas to strengthen other believers, he faithfully shepherded them until he was called to the next post. How are we individually faithful in this season to spiritually lead the people whom God has entrusted to us?

Take time to reread Acts 11 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

Often overlooked in this story is a man named Ananias. Upon receiving a vision, Ananias went to minister to Saul, which led to his conversion. Understandably, Anaias must have been fearful and nervous about approaching Saul. Yet, he faithfully obeyed the vision, and Paul’s ministry was confirmed and initiated.

Not everyone was as impactful as Paul in spreading the Gospel to the Gentiles. God used Paul to be a powerful witness and founder of the early church. However, everyone can be obedient like Ananias. Ananias knew Saul’s reputation, yet still obeyed what God called him to do. As a result, Paul went on to be one of the most effective missionaries, leaders, disciplers, and author of 13 books of the New Testament. We see from Ananias how God can powerfully use courageous obedience.

Take time to reread Acts 9 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

I might be able to suffer “shame” for His name, but I wouldn’t like it, let alone rejoice in it. I would hate being “flogged”, and even though I may not curse on the outside, I would curse in my heart. I would like to be considered “worthy”, but I wouldn’t rejoice under those circumstances. I know this because it’s difficult enough for me to live for Christ, especially in Orange County. So, how could I die for Him?

There are those of us who say that they would be able to joyfully approach such suffering, but let us be careful to not deceive ourselves. The reason we can’t do it is because we’re not righteous enough on our own. This kind of love and devotion is something we can’t fake. The only way that it can be done is through His Spirit. His Spirit in us. What a tremendous Spirit that is. A Spirit that elicits rejoicing that we should be considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.

Take time to reread Acts 5 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.

Traditionally, a cornerstone was a foundational piece that determined what was essential, true, and right for the establishment of the building. In modern times, a cornerstone is a ceremonial masonry stone set in a prominent location for display, usually on the outside of a building.

How many of us have moved Jesus from His place as the foundation of our life, determining what is right and true in our lives, to being a ceremonial piece that may look good but is disconnected from the integrity of our lives? They may both be called cornerstones but they serve completely different purposes. Let us use this as a reminder to consider if Jesus is truly the foundational cornerstone of our lives.

Take time to reread Acts 4 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.
