99 Days to Pentecost: Day 1

Day 1 - February 14, 2021

Passage: Colossians 1:18 (Read Full Chapter)
18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

"Does Jesus Have First Place in Everything?"
Written by Pastor Richard Kim

The main point of Colossians is to prove that Jesus “will come to have first place in everything” (v. 18).

To prove this, Paul writes that Jesus is the image and fullness of God (v. 15, 19). If we want to know God, all we have to do is look at Jesus. Everything (in heaven and earth) was created BY Jesus, FOR Jesus, and SUSTAINED by Jesus (v. 16 – 17). So even evil angels are somehow created mysteriously FOR Jesus! Jesus is not only first in creation but He is also FIRST in the church (v. 18). Jesus is reconciling all things, even us (sinful and hostile beings who did evil) back to Himself, if we continue in the faith (v. 20). The purpose of this “reconciliation” is so that we would recognize Jesus as first in everything. This is why Paul starts off this section saying, “Jesus is the firstborn (having first status) of all creation”.

Dear church, as we read through Colossians together, the question is simple. Is Jesus first in our lives? Does He have first status/preeminence in our hearts? Do we exist for Him because we were created by Him and reconciled to Him? Even evil angels will acknowledge the preeminence of Jesus, shouldn’t we?

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for creating us and reconciling us to yourself. We acknowledge you as first in everything. You are first in all of creation and you are first in the church. May creation and the church realize this great truth through your Holy Spirit. Amen.
