99 Days to Pentecost: Day 15

Day 15 - February 28, 2021
Hosea 6:6 (Read Full Chapter)
For I desire loyalty rather than sacrifice, And the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

“Continued Obedience”
Written by Pastor Joshua Kim

One of my favorite athletes is Steven Gerrard. Some of you may know him from his short stint after retirement when he played for the LA Galaxy, but Gerrard is a Liverpool/England legend. And one of the greatest attributes of Gerrard is that his entire career was spent with his local, boyhood club Liverpool. From the age of 9 until he retired, he stuck with Liverpool through thick and thin for over 26 years. Even though other offers from better situated clubs came, Gerrard stuck with Liverpool.

There is something about the length of time that says a lot about the seriousness or attitude of one’s commitment to something. In today’s passage, we see the response of the people to God’s discipline. Some are of the opinion the tone of this repentance to return seems superficial (v.1-3) as the Lord speaks of their loyalty as temporary as a morning cloud (v.4).
God desires loyalty rather than sacrifice; knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings (v. 6). God does not desire outward extravagance but a quiet heart that truly understands His heart. More than a hot fire that blazes and quickly extinguishes, God desires people who show a long obedience in the same direction.

How is your walk before God? Does it look more like a bright spark that quickly runs out? Or is there a steadiness in all seasons of life? Even though it may not be as bright or outwardly loud as others, do our lives exhibit the qualities of a relationship that has matured over time through consistency and depth? For this is the kind of heart accepted and blessed by God.

Prayer: Dear Father, thank You for Your unchanging character. We can be steadfast only because You are steadfast. Forgive us for how flippant we can be in our relationship with You. Cause us to seek long obedience by truly understanding Your heart. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
