99 Days to Pentecost: Day 35

Day 35 - March 20, 2021

Mark 2:6-7 (Read Full Chapter)
But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?"

“You Care More About Rules Than Jesus”
Written by Pastor Richard Kim

In Mark chapter 2, what connects every story is the questioning and opposition of the Scribes and Pharisees. When Jesus heals the paralytic, the scribes are questioning if Jesus is blaspheming. When Jesus eats with tax collectors and sinners, the Pharisees want to know why. When Jesus and His disciples do not fast, they get confused. Finally, when Jesus is eating grain on the Sabbath, the Pharisees bring judgment on Jesus. Although the stories are different, the questioning and judgment remains constant.

The problem with these scribes and Pharisees were that they loved the rules more than Jesus or people. This is what self-righteousness is. Self-righteousness is expressed in disappointment, disgust or annoyance at people for not living up to your standards. The antidote to self-righteousness is loving compassion. These Pharisees kept all the rules but they had no love for people. Therefore, they were blind to Jesus, even when He was standing right in front of them!

Is this you? Do you care more about the rules than Jesus or people? Repent of your self-righteousness so that you may see Jesus clearly.

Prayer: Father, help us to see your Son clearly by loving you and others more than our man-made rules and standards. Amen.
