99 Days to Pentecost: Day 6

Day 6 - February 19, 2021

1 John 2:15-17 (Read Full Chapter)
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God continues to live forever.

“Loving the Will of God”
Written by Pastor Joseph Noh

Soccer is a beloved sport of mine and growing up, I quickly learned that playing soccer with friends at the local park was vastly different from playing on a team, primarily because of the presence of a coach in the latter. In order to be successful in competition, we required organization, a general strategy to execute, and lots of discipline from the coach who would guide our practices in order to form us to his vision of what we needed to be. The ways that I may have desired to play, whether it was certain positions, certain styles, or amount of time, would all be surrendered because it was the will of the coach to determine all those things.

For believers, when it comes to being on God’s team, there are many things in the world that we must surrender. We cannot be consumed with prioritizing our fleshly desires that fulfill our lustful appetites, because love for those is empty of the Father. Furthermore, to obey is not merely to put our head down, grit our teeth, and push through  just because we are supposed to. Blessing comes when we seek to know the will of God so well that conviction sets in and we choose to be a part of what is happening.

What kind of player are we on God’s team? Are we refusing to surrender and choosing to play in the world? Do we show up but complain and wish we could play our own way? Or are we convinced believers in the heart, plan, and will of God, eager to know His way so deeply that it becomes ours as well? Let us focus on loving the will of God and not just resist the ways of the world in a begrudging and half hearted way.

Prayer: Father God, we are thankful that you invite us into your will and to join you in your good plan. We trust in you and ask that you help us to seek you more and more. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
