99 Days to Pentecost: Day 50

Day 50 - April 4, 2021

Philippians 1:29-30  (Read Full Chapter)
For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer on His behalf, experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

“For His Name’s Sake”
Written by Pastor Tina Hsu

Happy Resurrection Sunday! Today, let’s lift our praises to God for conquering sin and death through Jesus, once and for all!

“Death has been swallowed up in victory.
Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”
(1 Corinthians 15:54b-55)

“But he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; see, here is the place where they laid Him.” (Mark 16:6)

We are on Day 50 of our 99 Days Bible Reading Plan! Now that we have finished reading about Jesus’ life and ministry through the Gospel of Mark, we will be spending the next weeks in some New Testament letters, starting with the Letter to the Philippians today.

Philippians is one of Apostle Paul’s prison epistles - letters he wrote to the churches while he was in prison for his faith. Paul absolutely loves the Philippian church and rejoices at their spiritual growth and maturity: “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all” (1:3-4). One theme of Philippians is JOY in the midst of suffering and hardship, and Paul disciples these believers to live joyfully with a heart for the church’s unity and a sharp focus on Christ.

In this first chapter, Paul shares how him being in chains for Christ is bearing fruit for the gospel, so he rejoices and gives thanks. Those who witness his situation have become more courageous to preach the word of God without fear (1:14). What seems like a limitation (being in chains) has worked out in the Lord to be a multiplication in the kingdom of God. An insight into Christian discipleship that Paul teaches here, as he himself is in chains, is that followers of Christ are not only called to believe in Him, but to also suffer for Christ’s name, just as Paul was doing. What reaction do you have to know that Christ didn’t save you from sin for your comfort, but He saved you to have eternity with Him, and also to participate in His mission work while on earth which comes with suffering and persecution? Let the Holy Spirit reveal this truth to our hearts today.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, while it is challenging to think about suffering for my faith, I thank you and praise you because You will and You do provide strength, wisdom, victory, and joy in the midst of it as You did for the Apostle Paul and all your followers in the Bible who ran this race before me. You are worthy and help me to live for Your Name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
