99 Days to Pentecost: Day 44

Day 44 - March 29, 2021
Mark 11:7-8 (Read the Full Chapter)
They brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks on it; and He sat on it. 8 And many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields.

“Triumphal Entry”
Written by Pastor Won Kim

Have you ever watched a movie that puts you on an emotional roller coaster? Most Bibles title this passage as “The Triumphal Entry” or “Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King.” The problem is, where is the chariot? The trumpets and fanfare? The proclamation? Our King instead enters the city on a colt covered with cloaks as a makeshift saddle through a procession lined with leafy branches and outer garments.

So on one hand, we can understand how underwhelmed one might be when presented with this picture. But on the other hand, we realize how Jesus has captured the hearts of the people. Crowds are lining the streets, cutting branches, and shedding their outer garments, not for a conquering warrior or elder statesmen, but for a carpenter they recognize as a divine leader. Do we respond to Jesus entering our lives with the same attitude of hopeful dependence?

The crowd shouts “Hosanna!” as a form of adoration or praise, but what they are stating in this passage is, “Save us, our Messiah, as you take your rightful throne and extend heaven’s salvation to us.” The people wanted salvation from their political problems, from Rome, from foreign rule. Greater than this, Jesus means to free them from sin and death. Yet, the same crowd that welcomed their king would soon be chanting for his crucifixion.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, in this week where we remember the death and resurrection of Your Son, help us to understand that the depths of His wounds mirror the depths of His love for us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
