99 Days to Pentecost: Day 41

Day 41 - March 26, 2021

Mark 8:29, 31-32 (Read Full Chapter)
And He continued questioning them: “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”…  And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise from the dead. And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

“The Christ of God”
Written by Pastor Joshua Kim

One of the first things I noticed when moving to Southern California is that people love standing in lines, especially outside the latest #HYPE restaurant everyone is talking about. But as we all know, there’s nothing more dreadful than believing the hype only to be disappointed. It’s not what you were hoping for.

Often, there is a rift between our expectations and reality, isn’t there? And starting in Mark 8, we start to see this rift between who the disciples think Jesus is and who He really is. Up to this point, the disciples are blown away by His miracles and teachings. They are growing confident He is the One!

It crescendos into this confession by Peter, a confession that Matthew accounts only the Father could have revealed to them. And just when they thought they figured Jesus out, He begins to talk about what will happen to this Christ. He is to suffer and be rejected, and ultimately killed.

We see the response of the disciples. That cannot be the fate of the Christ! Peter goes as far as pulling Jesus aside to rebuke the One he just confessed to be the Christ. Imagine pulling Jesus aside to rebuke Him.

Don’t we experience this? Our expectations of who God ought to be and who He truly is often doesn’t line up. And rather than humbling ourselves before Him, we pull God aside and rebuke Him. Don’t You love me? Don’t You know this is what’s good for me?

Perhaps not as blatant as Peter’s rebuke, but are there unspoken grumblings in your heart because things aren’t the way you think things should be, especially to someone who is a “good Christian”? We must repent for trying to fit God to our definition, or we miss out on what God is truly doing.

Prayer: Dear Father, forgive me for the ways I try to define You. Forgive me for thinking I know better than You, especially when it comes to what is good for me. You are Creator. You created me. Therefore, You know what is best. Help me to trust in that truth. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
