99 Days to Pentecost: Day 45

Day 45 - March 30, 2021

Mark 12:42 (Read Full Chapter)
But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

“Active Faith, Part Deux”
Written by Pastor Won Kim

There are two subtle points that I’d like to highlight from this passage. This woman not only gave her all, but she gave to an institution where the teachers of the law “devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers.” It would be akin to giving your birthday money to the local boy scout troop even though the majority of the kids in the troop bully you at school every day. And using your last few dollars to do so. She has the trust to differentiate that when she gives her offering, it is to God, even though it goes to the temple tithing box. She also knows that judgment is not her right, it belongs to the Lord. Mark contrasts the sincere, humble, and anonymous devotion of the widow to the arrogant, ostentatious, and superficial displays of “devotion” of the Pharisee and scribes.

Second, she possesses what God loves: faith. She believes He will meet all of her needs. Very much like the blind beggar in chapter 10, she displays active faith. She may not know where her next meal may come from, but she believes that God will provide. She could have given one coin instead of two. She would have given 50%. Probably more than many of us have given. But, she gave both. She gave everything. That’s what active faith looks like.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to see beyond our enemies who seek to devour us. Help us to see beyond our circumstances. Help us only to see and rely on You. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
